Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Canon Point: Post-timeskip after defeating Van the first time (about halfway through the game)
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: 21
World Information: Auldrant

Personal History: Guy's wiki article

Personality: Guy is...sort of complicated. Not the layered kind of complicated with a mean outside and a squishy inside or the weird complicated, just...kind of complicated.

His personality as a child is more hinted at than explicitly shown, but according to Guy himself he was a very shy and quiet kid, teased fairly regularly (by his older sister and female cousin even!) for not being very ‘manly’. He’s fairly knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects as an adult, so it’s not too far of a stretch to assume that he was a reasonably intelligent child. Sometime after the massacre of his family, he becomes bitter and vengeful--towards Duke Fabre and his family primarily, as the Duke was the one that lead the attack on his estate. Of course, while he hates the Fabre clan, he can’t show outward hatred or hostility towards the members while he’s employed by them, regardless of how much he wants to, so he at least starts pretending he doesn’t hate them.

It’s hard to imagine the Guy that most people see as that same child—the unhappy, revenge-minded one--but inside, he mostly is. On the outside, he’s easygoing and cheerful, if slightly ditzy. He’s charismatic--enough that a decent portion of the Fabre household maids (as well as several other women) are attracted to him--polite, and humble.

Guy’s not a leader by any means, partly due to his occupation as a servant and partly due to the fact that he’s just not very commanding. Again, he was a reserved child, so it’s easier for him to follow rather than lead to begin with, and working several years as a servant strengthened that. He tends to default to the opinions of others, sometimes expressing dislike or skepticism for a plan or course of action, but doesn’t often try to take charge of anything unless he absolutely has to, and even then he’s a bit awkward about it. Guy also has trouble refusing most requests made of him. He might complain a little about the task if it’s time-consuming or out of his way, but if it’s within his abilities he’ll probably do it anyway.

A trait he developed by living in the Fabre household was a sort of ‘older brother’ attitude. Mostly towards Luke, who started out as an enemy, then became a sort-of friend. The original Luke, anyway. The replica Luke was both of those automatically, but also became a sort of son that Guy never wanted.

Since it was Guy’s duty to act as Luke’s playmate/friend/babysitter/manservant of sorts, the task of dealing with the ‘amnesic’ Luke fell primarily on him, forcing Guy to, as a teenager, essentially help raise a child who he really didn’t like in the first place.

But Guy ended up getting attached to Luke and protective of him the more time he spent with him. He doesn’t consider Luke a son, since they’re so close in age, but he does acknowledge that the relationship almost like that, even if Luke doesn’t. The protective attitude extends to the rest of the party Guy travels with, with the exception of Jade and the girls, who Guy cares for but keeps a safe distance from.

This is where we get into the subject of Guy’s severe gynophobia. He has no issue talking to or seeing women--he mentions several times that he ‘likes looking at women’--but if they get too close to him or try to touch him, he freaks out. Spectacularly. It’s revealed later that this fear stems from the death of his family, when he ended up buried in the corpses of his sister and most of the household’s female servants. That memory was suppressed for years and simply became an unexplainable phobia. To his dismay, a lot of women see his fear as just nervousness and find it adorable whenever he gets flustered around them. Most of his party, especially Luke and Anise, tease him frequently about it while Natalia and Tear find it annoying.

Once he figures this out, he gets a little better at dealing with the fear. At his canon point he’s capable of being physically close to the opposite sex for short periods of time, but will panic if someone catches him unaware.

Another quirk of Guy’s is his fascination--and skill with--machinery of all types. He loves fon technology especially; his bedroom is littered with bits and pieces of stuff he’s taken apart and put partially back together and he gets very excited when he and the main party find ancient technology or travel to anywhere that’s heavily associated with it, such as Belkend and Yulia City. He studies it obsessively, and is always happy to volunteer information about fontech that he’s picked up either on his travels or in books or magazines. It’s something else he’s frequently teased about, and while he acts put out about it, he doesn’t otherwise seem to mind the teasing.

As mentioned above, Guy is sort of ditzy-acting, apparently not taking a lot too seriously and frequently teasing his friends or joking around to diffuse tense situations. This isn’t entirely an act, but he usually knows or notices a lot more than he lets on. In order to avoid questions or to shrug off suspicion, he’s become very good at pretending not to know what’s going on, lying, or successfully changing the subject to something else entirely. However, if he knows something interesting that isn’t likely to cause some sort of problem, he’s more than happy to share it with the class.

This leads to him developing an interesting relationship with Jade, where in one of them will make remarks or observations that are either unnoticed or misinterpreted by everyone but Jade or Guy, who will call the other out on it. Guy isn’t above teasing Jade, but he’s more careful not to go too far or jab too deeply, just in case.

Also, while he usually acts cheerful and not-so-serious, he’s very capable of anger. And unfortunately, he’s the kind of person who suppresses and internalizes anger, so it tends to explode out all at once. And despite being a good liar in other aspects, dislike and hatred are not things he’s good at hiding, and once in a while his tone will betray his words or his body language will show how he really feels about a situation.

Key themes: Revenge/forgiveness, facing one's fears

Main Motivation: Revenge for himself and his family

Skills: First and foremost, Guy is an excellent swordsman. His fighting style is one that focuses on speed rather than strength and is designed to work best without a shield. As a result, Guy’s specialty is one-handed swords, though he does use his blade’s sheath as a shield/blunt force weapon. He’s very agile and has excellent reflexes both inside and outside of battle.

His special techniques are called ‘artes’ and come in physical and quasi-magical (‘arcane artes’), which are physical attacks combined with high concentrations of elemental fonons.

Complete Arte list. At his canonpoint, Guy would know all the base and arcane artes, with the exception of Soaring Light Spear and Tempest.

Also, as a servant, Guy knows how to do basic household chores like cleaning and general upkeep, and is shown to be a pretty good cook if necessary (if you leave him to his own devices, however, you will find seafood in e v e r y t h i n g, it’s a fact). It’s also mentioned that he’s a certified lifeguard of sorts or at least has some training in water rescue. He’s as good at fixing and operating machinery as he is obsessed with the stuff, although he has to have some idea of what he’s dealing with does before he can actually do anything with it.

Item: His choker.

Bottom Line: Describe your character in one short sentence! How you’d describe/sell them to someone who’s never heard of them before.

History: Guy's own wiki article and one for his world, Auldrant.

About: Guy is...sort of complicated.

He was born into nobility, to a count and countess who governed a large island. He was shy and quiet kid, teased fairly regularly for not living up to the 'strength' of his given name. It's implied that he preferred books over fighting and took up swordfighting fairly unwillingly. As an adult, he's not vastly different. He's cheerful and easygoing, possessing charisma that he considers both a boon and a curse in nearly equal parts, and can border on ditziness when not attempting to explain something.

However, underneath that is more than a bit of darkness, in the form of hatred and vengeance. After losing most of his family as a result of war, Guy vows revenge on the soldier--one Duke Herzog fon Fabre--who took their lives, as well as his family. To accomplish this, he manages to get himself employed as a servant to said family in the interest of getting close to them.

And get close he does, but not by choice. In the Fabre household, his primary duty is to care for Luke, the Duke's son. This takes an odd turn when Guy is a teenager, where he's saddled with the task of teaching a traumatized and entirely amnesiac Luke how to function as a human child again. He's pissed, of course, but can't kill Luke in his sleep despite how much he wants to and how easy it would be, so he reluctantly becomes the father/older brother of a child-sibling he never wanted.

When he later finds out that Luke is basically a different person and not someone who lost their memories, Guy realizes he doesn't really hate the Luke he essentially raised but rather the one he thought he was trying to fix (he still hates the Luke that now goes by Asch).

Big brother tendencies aside, Guy’s not much of a leader by any means, partly due to his occupation as a servant and partly due to the fact that he’s just not very commanding. Again, he was a reserved child, so it’s easier for him to follow rather than lead to begin with, and spending nearly two decades serving others strengthened that.

This is where we get into the subject of Guy’s severe gynophobia. He has no issue talking to or seeing women--he mentions several times that he ‘likes looking at women’ (he's absolutely a pervert)--but if they get too close to him or try to touch him, he'll reflexively flee. It’s revealed later that this fear stems from the death of his household, when he ended up buried in the corpses of his sister and most of the household’s female servants.

At his canon point he’s capable of being physically close to the opposite sex for short periods of time, but will panic if caught unaware or trapped.

Another quirk of Guy’s is his fascination--and skill with--machinery of all types. He loves fon technology especially; his bedroom is littered with bits and pieces of stuff he’s taken apart and put partially back together and he gets very excited when he and the main party find ancient technology or travel to anywhere that’s heavily associated with it. He studies it obsessively, and is always happy to volunteer information about fontech that he’s picked up either on his travels or read about in books or magazines. It’s something else he’s frequently teased about, and while he acts put out about it, he doesn’t otherwise seem to mind the teasing.

Regains:: LEMON GEL - A large gummi candy that will restore 60% of your HP--whatever that means.

STUFFED RAPPIG - A stuffed toy that appears to be a pig with long, rabbit-like ears.

Motives: It would depend on who/what he's killing. He'd definitely kill in self-defense, and while he doesn't enjoy killing, he's no stranger to it, up to and including human beings.

In terms of motives, deep down he'd like any chance he could get to see his family again, but he's pretty much accepted that what's dead will stay dead. If someone could convince him that they could in fact restore his family somehow, he'd pay a blood price for that.

Alternately, just make him think that a random other person is Asch and antagonize him, that'd be

Sample: Show us your writing chops! This can be a thread from our TDM, as long as it’s got at least ten posts from you, or it can be an original sample. Either way, it should show your character interacting with the game setting.

Plot Involvement: sure, if time allows
Case Involvement: Nah, hit me with RNG
Other: Nope.

Abilities: First and foremost, Guy is an excellent swordsman. He fights using the Sigmund style, a style that emphasizes speed over power, using his sword in his right hand and the sheath in his left as sort of a shield. He’s very agile and has excellent reflexes in and out of battle. His techniques are called ‘artes’ and come in physical and quasi-magical (‘arcane artes’), which are physical attacks combined with high concentrations of elemental fonons.

Also, as a servant, Guy knows how to do basic household chores like cleaning and general upkeep, and is explicitly show to be a decent cook if necessary. It’s also briefly mentioned that he’s a certified lifeguard (of sorts). He’s as good at fixing and operating machinery as he is obsessed with the stuff, although he has to have some idea of what he’s dealing with does before he can actually do anything with it.

Alignment: Piphron. Due to his past, Guy actually has issues fully trusting many people, despite how friendly he acts. He's been living under a pseudonym and vague past since his age was in the single digits, and with a family he hates, so he's had to be careful about what he says to who for years.

Other: As of his canonpoint, his gynophobia has diminished somewhat, in that he can handle being nearer women and for longer periods of time. Realizing what caused the phobia hasn’t actually changed much besides his general anxiety level.

Other: Can't think of anything?

Name: Guy Cecil
Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Canon Point: Just before meeting up with Tear and Luke at Aramis Spring
Age: 21
History: Guy’s wiki article
General Abyss wiki article

On the outside, he’s easygoing and cheerful, if slightly ditzy-seeming.

Since it was Guy’s duty to act as Luke’s playmate/friend/babysitter of sorts, the task of dealing with the ‘amnesic’ Luke fell primarily on him, forcing Guy to, as a teenager, essentially help raise a child who he really didn’t like in the first place.

But Guy ended up getting attached to Luke and protective of him the more time he spent with him. He doesn’t consider Luke a son, since they’re so close in age, but he does acknowledge that the relationship is sort of like that, even if Luke doesn’t.

That memory was suppressed and became an unexplainable phobia. To his dismay, a lot of women see his phobia as just nervousness and find it adorable whenever he gets flustered around them. Most of his party, especially Luke and Anise, tease him frequently about it while Natalia and Tear find it annoying.

Another quirk of Guy’s is his obsession--and skill with--machinery of all types. It’s something his traveling party teases him frequently about, but he seems either resigned to it or possibly doesn’t mind the teasing.

And unfortunately, he’s the kind of person who suppresses anger and doesn’t make it too visible, so he sometimes appears to flip directly from ‘happy’ or ‘mildly concerned’ to ‘rage’ very quickly.

Abilities: First and foremost, Guy is an excellent swordsman. He fights using the Sigmund style, a style that emphasizes speed over power, using his sword in his right hand and the sheath in his left as sort of a shield/blunt force trauma object. He’s very agile and has excellent reflexes in and out of battle. His techniques are called ‘artes’ and come in physical and quasi-magical (‘arcane artes’), which are physical attacks combined with high concentrations of elemental fonons.

(Artes would probably not be applicable to the game, as the game world doesn’t have fonons but I can provide a list of them if necessary.)

Also, as a servant, Guy knows how to do basic household chores like cleaning and general upkeep, and is a decent enough cook. He’s as good at fixing and operating machinery as he is obsessed with the stuff, although he has to have some idea of what he’s dealing with does before he can actually do anything with it. He has training in maritime rescue, though how much is questionable as it’s not a skill he’s shown using to a great extent.

TL;DR - Guy is great with a sword and also a good househusband.

Strengths: good with a blade, charismatic, friendly, helpful, hard-working
Weaknesses: actually shy, women, bottles up anger, holds grudges, nervous when forced to lead
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Oddly (and even if he doesn't remember it), Guy has spent enough time in the service of someone else that he's gotten used to it, and would be awkward as a god. Besides, if he can raise a kid into a mostly-functional teenager, keeping a god on track for...whatever they need to do should be easy.
Cause Of Death: Ambushed and overpowered by monsters in the Aramis Springs cavern.
Vessel: A hitare-hakama ensemble
Name Location: Right arm, just above the elbow
Power: Enhanced agility and speed. Basically, Guy lends his existing natural agility and speed to a god lacking in those areas or boosts one with already enhanced attributes.

CHARACTER NAME: Guy Cecil
CHARACTER SERIES: Tales of the Abyss

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yes
Threadhopping: Yup!
Fourthwalling: Yes
Offensive subjects (elaborate): I'm difficult to offend...if something comes up, I'll let you know.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Yes and no. He has trauma-induced gynophobia, so while other males will probably get an odd look from him unless they're friends (or not the huggy type), females will likely trigger a panic attack. Quick hugs are okay, please do not trap him in a hug unless you want to deal with him after he's passed out.
Kissing this character: Similar to above, only with less possibility of fainting
Flirting with this character: Sure. He flirts with women (often without even trying), but if you're male the worst that'll happen is that he'll raise an eyebrow and change the subject. Unless it's a friend, then he might flirt back a little.
Fighting with this character: Go ahead! He's a pretty good swordsman and quick for his size, though, so be prepared for that.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Yes, as long as it doesn't involve body part removal, face mutilation, or exposing bones that don't normally get exposed.
Killing this character: I'd prefer not to. Please discuss it with me before hand if it's inevitable.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure, but let me know so I can tell you what you'll be able to find out.

Warnings: Murder, death, possible talk of revenge via murder (in this case, killing the family of the man who killed his), trauma-induced phobia

Re: Airships

I've been here for a couple days already, and while the creature...assigned...to me has been very helpful in filling me in on what exactly I'm doing here and why, as well as the workings of this world, her knowledge is limited. Especially in regards to the airships docked in Aqures Ixen's 12th district.

I'm looking for anyone familiar with said airships who would be willing to chat with me, or give me the clearance to examine one of said airships more closely than the dock or the deck of the ships. Please reply to this letter or contact Guy Cecil.

If possible, I'd like to request a Limit that changes slightly depending on whether a blade or bow is equipped. The two listed above are very similar except that the damage comes from below in one and from above in the other. If this isn't possible, I'll use just Wyrm Wrath instead.

First Impressions/Permissions

☄ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: ~6'0" (182.88 cm) without shoes on, muscular but fairly lean besides that. Has short, messy blond hair and blue eyes. He tends to wear whatever is available and fits him, his only real preference being things that don't restrict his movement.

[Far Shore specific: his kanji is imprinted just above his right elbow and usually at least partly visible unless he's wearing long sleeves.]
♚ DEMEANOUR: Somewhat formal and generally open. He also tends to unconsciously maintain a greater distance between himself and females than between himself and other males (see below for more details).
♚ AURAL: Here he is being a nerd (Japanese) and and less of one here (English). His speech is generally casual polite, but he'll start out more formal with people he isn't familiar with or those he knows outrank him socially.
♚ OLFACTORY: Soap, if he's recently showered, but otherwise he doesn't smell particularly interesting.
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: He doesn't have any mental shields, so it's not hard to read his thoughts. Surface thoughts are pretty uninteresting; he's fairly used to lying, especially by omission, so he's very likely to have thoughts different from what he's actually saying.
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Nothing, really. He does use elemental 'magic' to augment his weapons or base skills, but he's not a mage by any means. Though he would probably be capable of learning weaker spells.

☄ Permissions

♚ BACKTAGGING: Yep, for the most part
♚ THREADHOPPING: Yep!
♚ FOURTHWALLING: Just don't tell him he's fictional.
♚ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Go ahead, but be careful. Due to severe gynophobia, he's okay with physical contact from males (depending on relationship), but any female within arm's reach of him will trigger a panic attack. Normally he just gets flustered and tries to get a safe distance away quickly, but if surprised from behind, can and has responded by throwing the 'attacker'. Despite the phobia, he does like women and does appreciate quick kisses or hugs, even if they're also terrifying.
♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Fight him! He's good with a blade, though his style focuses more on speed than power. As far as injuries go, I draw the line at heavy facial mutilation or entire limb removal (unless unavoidable).
♚ RELATIONSHIPS: I ship fairly indiscriminately and Guy flirts with many girls (and possibly other guys, situation depending), so ships are okay, they just won't likely be intimate, if at all, aha...
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: He doesn't have anything in the way of mental shields or protection against telepaths and the like, so anything in his head is free to peek at. His childhood was fairly traumatizing, have fun with that.
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: While he doesn't have much of a talent for magic, he's capable of drawing on magical energy if it exists in high enough concentrations and could possibly learn to cast at least weak spells if taught.

Kissing this character: Would it end in mass murder?

Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: You can just put "Contact Me" for any of these, too. To save yourself time, and whatnot.
